Thank You from the Porn Industry

The porn industry thanks Los Angeles for passing Measure B, which requires all pornographic actors to wear condoms.

This is great. I guess Vivid’s got a bone to pick with LA voters.

Last Tuesday night, Ali and I hopped a cab to Jackson Heights, Queens, to meet Jorge Muñoz, better known as “Colombia” or to President Obama, “The Angel in Queens.”

From the back of a pickup truck, Jorge and a few Spanish-speaking buddies serve hot food and drink to a line of hungry men and women at the corner of 74th and Roosevelt Ave. Jorge is here every night of the week: ”This don’t take a night off,” he tells us, holding both sides of his stomach and pointing to the line of people, mostly Hispanic day laborers.

Jorge is a small but nimble man. He’s been serving food to these folks in Queens for nearly a decade. When Ali and I arrive to hand him a check we’d been collecting in The PIT’s Karma jars for months, he tells us our timing is good: “Everybody’s giving to Hurricane Sandy right now. I’m not getting any money.” All of the food and drink are paid for with private donations and Jorge’s salary as a school bus driver.

He gets no financial gain from this. He tells us about his hustle to find cheap, wholesale meat and produce from bodegas and grocery stores. He tells us how many gallons of hot chocolate he can make out of a big container of Swiss Miss, and how he uses milk and water “because it tastes better.” In the summer he serves iced tea.

He tells us about the bureaucracy a 503c non-profit in The City of New York must face, namely through license and insurance fees and how most restaurants are loathe to donate excess food for fear of lawsuits.

He tells us how he drives his nephew to school in the morning and how he is enrolled in business school and hopes to earn an MBA by 2014. He’s no dummy: ”You wanna help?” he asks us. We know better than to say no.

So for about an hour on a Tuesday night in Queens, Ali and I served about 200 cups of hot chocolate, along with George, a general contractor who has worked with Ali for years, and who tagged along for a free cab ride home.
